Please feel free to browse our Current & Popular leisure reading collection, now fully cataloged on our Goodreads page. Using the links to the various "shelves," you can limit your browsing to books held at either the Athens campus or at the Arrendale Library in Demorest. (But remember, if you're in Demorest and want to read a book from Athens -- or vice-versa -- we can get it for you in a day or two.)

You can also use the shelves to find out what books we have in various genres (or on various subjects) -- sci-fi/fantasy, memoir, music, graphic novels, you name it.

And speaking of graphic novels, stay tuned! We're expecting a substantial delivery in the next couple of months. :)

On Wednesday the 12th, we'll be closing at 8:00 and after that, we'll be on our Holiday Schedule on both campuses. Please refer to the table below to find out when we'll be open!

 

 

Update: The Library has just received word that Piedmont College is closing at 2:00 pm on Friday, the 21st. The Library will therefore be closed as well.

Big Season for the Current & Popular Collection

If you still haven't taken the time to browse our new Current & Popular reading collection, now is the perfect time. Thanks to prolific ordering over the summer months, the collection has doubled in size and is now over 600 titles strong! As always, you'll find every major style and genre represented -- fiction and non-fiction alike -- spread across both Piedmont campuses.

China's Mo Yan wins 2012 Nobel Prize for Literature!

 

From the prize committee press release:

"Through a mixture of fantasy and reality, historical and social perspectives, Mo Yan has created a world reminiscent in its complexity of those in the writings of William Faulkner and Gabriel García Márquez, at the same time finding a departure point in old Chinese literature and in oral tradition. In addition to his novels, Mo Yan has published many short stories and essays on various topics, and despite his social criticism is seen in his homeland as one of the foremost contemporary authors."

What constitutes an authoritative source?

An authoritative source is a work known to be reliable because its authority or authenticity is widely recognized by experts in the field. (Reitz, Joan. Online Dictionary for Library and Information Science: Accessed 9/26/2012)

The Library specializes in collecting these types of resources so that students and faculty have the tools they need to research effectively. Rest assured that resources accessed through the Library’s website are always authoritative and appropriate for academic work.

Using Google for research is risky -- same goes for Yahoo!, Bing, and other search engines on the web. Free internet resources are sometimes authoritative (especially if they are offered by government agencies or academic institutions), but usually are not. Wikipedia, for example, is not authoritative because there is no way to verify authorship and anyone can edit an entry at any time.
